The character of Sean Duffy is an unforgettable one. The lead character was well done, but some of the supporting cast were a bit indistinguishable. A trek that will take them three days! You really got a sense of despair, danger and dissolution. I enjoyed the other two and thought I'd catch up on what I may have missed. After watching Cold Ground, I am convinced that producer, writer, and director Fabien Delage could have made an enjoyable horror flick no matter how he decided to do so, but the found footage sub-genre just helped him that much more. It's a pedestrain way to build a character, and the worst part is that these Desert Island Discs moments always for me break down the fourth wall. The best part of this book? McKinty gives us amazing descriptions of Northern Ireland in 1981, the seedy desperate housing estates on both sides, the hunger strikes in The Maze prison, car bombs, and enforcers on both sides specialising in knee capping and assassination. He tells us his story with ease and such clarity you feel like you're there. I worked with some of the best Irish and english musicians and we always tried to entertain everyone to ease the pain somewhat. Coupled with a seemingly unrelated suicide and heat from above to close the cases Duffy is yet to solve a murder as we're introduced to him , Duffy is instantly against the odds. I posted the link at the bottom of this review because it really, really, helped me to, not only understand the underlying elements of the plot, but also to appreciate and enjoy the intricate details that make this book so unique. We are introduced to him right off the top and made me laugh out loud. Northern Ireland, as seen through Duffy's eyes, is a minefield of actual and theoretical dangers, any one which can be triggered by a wrong step, a wrong turn or a wrong word. Hunger strikes in Ireland, Bobby Sands has just died. This will help others know what types of movies you like when they are reading your reviews! I'm already on to the second book, and the writing has noticably improved, so give it a go. When a missing girl turned up dead, Duffy wondered if there was any link. McKinty brings the Belfast of 1981 alive with short, sharp descriptions of shattered streets, grandiose sectarian graffitti, menacing British firepower in the air and on the ground, and a populace that's always keyed up to either fight, flee or heap abuse on the police.

This is just for those of you who did not do well in high school history class like myself to say the least. My wife's grandmother immigrated from northern Ireland in the late 19th century and since things had calmed down in Ireland we flew over to find her ancestral home. The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, The Descent and, most recently, Altar, are great examples of found footage films that come to mind. I think what McKinty captures best is the all-encompassing feeling of dread and tension that people, especially the police, lived with. He's smart, funny and believable as a cop. I thought it was very interesting that the series is set in Northern Ireland in the 80s and that the main character is a Catholic police in a dominated Protestant force. Sean Duffy is a melancholy character; angry, yet thoughtful and intelligent. You call in a tip about a murder, the police go to investigate and they trip a booby trap or the provos remotely detonate a landmine or pipe bomb. It goes back to the late 1980's in Belfast region and features a policeman who is dogged in his approach to solve murders and is decidedly self directed even when not supported by those in charge, following his beliefs at all costs.
