A delightfully dishy novel about the all-time most impossible boss in the history of impossible bosses. As she is whisked away to Paris with Miranda and faces all the glamor that could be hers, including a flashy although artificial freelance journalist, she is forced to make a decision about where she wants to be in her life. And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul. The writing is not the best but perhaps I should not have been expecting so much. I would recommend for a quick easy read, but I have no interest in reading the sequel. That is good considering I have seen the movie.

Andrea changes her attitude and behavior, affecting her private life and the relationship with her boyfriend Nate, her family and friends. The book is in a narrative form and of course Hollywood added and removed some episodes. Her boss, Miranda, is a tyrant demanding unimaginable things all the while belittling Andrea and others in the firm. I don't know anyone who would treat their loved ones that way, unless they were themselves selfish and thoughtless. This is the reason it took me forever to read The Talented Mr. I could understand Meryl Streep's character and although over bearing, she was still real. Don't understand the hype for this book. There were 2 small things that annoyed me, but not enough to detract from my enjoyment of the book: 1 the depiction of the relationship with Alex.
I stuck with it to the end just to get there. She puts up with it all by keeping her eyes on the prize: a recommendation from Miranda that will get Andrea a top job at any magazine of her choosing. It sounds like cruel and unusual punishment to treat someone that way when they already have to deal with a horrible boss and don't have much of a choice over their schedule and free time. The furry swashbucklers race to a deserted island where X marks the spot, but along with battling each other, they must outwit ruthless buccaneers, angry monkeys and a giant octopus to strike it rich. When Miranda demands that she obtain the next unpublished Harry Potter manuscript, you can sense that she is trying to force her to quit, but it makes the young woman dig in to please her boss. As things escalate from the merely unacceptable to the downright outrageous, however, Andrea begins to realize that the job a milliongirls would die for may just kill her. In New York, the simple and naive just-graduated in journalism Andrea Sachs is hired to work as the second assistant of the powerful and sophisticated Miranda Priestly, the ruthless and merciless executive of the Runway fashion magazine.
But Miranda realizes that behind the glitz of a perfect successful woman is a family misfortune - like many other women. I really enjoyed reading this story, as it has themes that many people can relate to. Everyone loves talking about that especially awful boss! Anyway, I put the book down on my first poolside day and kind of forgot about it. You have to read the book to find out how it all came together. I took it with me on vacation to Cabo and within the first chapter, I was a bit put off.
No wonder they saw so little of each other that the relationship became unsustainable! Caveat: I am aware that I usually have a bit of a hard go at reading a book when I have seen the movie because I have a hard time separating the actors from the literary characters. She sees this as only a stepping stone to another journalism position. The book's Miranda was not real. However, I threw it in my bag recently and now I am pretty into it. That guy sounded like such a dweeb that I was honestly happy the relationship didn't last. It is an interesting look inside the fashion industry. She takes a job as assistant to the editor of a fashion magazine.
Although Andrea shows no fashion sense and is immediately scorned by everyone, Miranda nonetheless hires her as the second assistant. The book is entertaining, the characters and story suck you in, and I want to know what happens. Andrea Sachs dreams of a publishing job with the New Yorker but knows she must pay her dues first. Andrea dreams to become a journalist and faces the opportunity as a temporary professional challenge. But - Andrea stayed too long hurting all relationships, some beyond repair. Into this mix comes Andrea, a young woman who knows nothing of the fashion industry, has never read the magazine, and doesn't know who Miranda Priestley is.
And even if she survives, she has to decide whether or not the job is worth the price of her soul. Well written and held my attention even though I know nothing about fashion or designers. I was rooting for Andy to get together with the hot writer and dump her irritating boyfriend.
